Performance Sails is an independently operated sail loft near Chester, Nova Scotia. We specialize in the design, construction, and servicing of sails for keel boats and multihulls from 20’ to 60′.

In the winter of 1993/94, three Toronto sailors hatched a plan to design and build sails for their own boats. Three of the four sails built that winter won their first races, and the loft has maintained a performance outlook ever since. Performance Sails transitioned from a hobby to a part-time shop into a full-time business in 2004.

Durk Steigenga moved to Nova Scotia in 2011 and worked under contract with the Michele Stevens Sailloft Ltd. outside Lunenburg until 2014. While there he studied traditional sailmaking and worked on the schooner Columbia project under the guidance of Robert Stevens.

In 2015 Durk started making Performance Sails in his own facility in Blandford, on Mahone Bay.

Our custom cruising and racing sails are designed to fit each client’s needs and performance requirements, using boat-specific measurements to ensure proper fit. Construction techniques reflect our commitment to premium quality, and the sails are skillfully assembled using high quality sailcloth and hardware.

All sails are made in Nova Scotia, Canada – design, build, and service work is done at our local facility. Materials and workmanship are warranted for two years from the date of purchase, and if you’re not satisfied with your sail we’ll buy it back!
